The National Capital Area Council has come up with some alternatives to the Summer Day Camp and Overnight Camp programs.
Cub Family Summertime Passport
In place of Cub Scout Day Camp is this fun way to plan some activities for the summer. Parents and kids alike may earn the patch (with slightly different requirements). Download the Passport
All activities must be completed between Memorial Day Weekend and Labor Day Weekend. If you would like your patches in September, you may order directly from NCAC by uploading your filled out Passport and payment for $5 per patch, by July 31. The first batch of patches will ship in September. If you complete the Passport requirements later than July 31, not to worry, the closeout date for the second batch of patches is September 30. Those patches will be shipped in November.
If your Tiger though Webelos ranked Cub completes the Passport, please let your Den Leader or Dennis Naidu know so they get credit for attending Summer Camp.
Camp Goshen Webelos Home Camping
One of the exciting things about moving up to Webelos is being able to go on Den Campouts and being able to attend Overnight Camp at some of the Scout Camps in Virginia. Camps Goshen and Snyder are closed during the pandemic but have devised a plan with synchronous and asynchronous activities to complete a lot of advancement requirements. The cost is $125 for the program which runs from Monday through Friday for the chosen week. The $125 also covers that Scout should you choose to attend Family Camping at the end of the week. The weeks available are 7/6-7/10, 7/13-7/17, 7/20-7/24, and 7/27-7/31. Registrations close the Monday before the start day of the camp week,..BUT SPACES ARE FILLING FAST and will close out once filled. Register ASAP!
Family Camping Weekends at Camps Goshen & Snyder
To help with the camping part of Summer Camp, Goshen Scout Reservation in Goshen, VA and Camp Snyder in Haymarket, VA will have 4 weekends available for Family Campouts at their facilities. Reservations are limited at a cost of $25 per person (children 5 & under are free and those Webelos who attended the Home Camping on any of the 4 weeks are prepaid.) This open to the entire family, but it is BYO food and tents, and health forms are required ahead of the date for each family member. The camp will have limited activities and activity equipment since they won't have a heavy staff. These are the only availabilities for NCAC so they will fill fast once word gets around. Available weekends are 7/10-7/12, 7/17-7/19, 7/24-7/26, and 7/31-8/2. Register here.

Pack 1519 Blue and Gold Banquet (3 pm- 6 pm on Sun 2/23/20)
Friendly reminder: the Pack 1519 Blue and Gold banquet convenes on Sun 2/23 from 3 pm to 6 pm. If you didn't get a chance to buy tickets during the Pinewood Derby, can still do so here.
Todd Wheeler is leading the Webelos to put together this year's Blue and Gold. As part of the program they are presenting a slide show. If you have any photos of Pack 1519 scouts in action (especially photos of our current Arrows, who will be bridging over to Troop 1519 during the banquet), please send them to Todd here.
Deadline to purchase tickets to this year's Blue and Gold banquet is this Sun 2/16. Look forward to seeing everybody there!
Washington Birthday/President's Day Parade (12:30 pm - 2 pm on Mon 2/17/20)
George may or may not have said "I cannot tell a lie" when he chopped down his father's cherry tree...but either way, your scout can help celebrate his birthday on Mon 2/17 by joining other scouts in the region to march in the Alexandria George Washington Birthday Parade.
This event is held annually on the third Monday in February and winds through a one-mile route along the historic streets of Old Town. It is the oldest and largest parade celebrating the birth of George Washington in the USA.
Wolf leader Patrick Gray has kindly offered to lead Pack 1519's participation in this event. You can sign up to join the march and find out more information here.

Pack 1519 Wreaths Across America
From Webelos Leader Todd Wheeler
Greetings!
Pack 1519 encourages all Scouts to participate in the annual "Wreaths Across America" event on Saturday, December 14, 2019. At this event, participants place wreaths on the headstones of our fallen soldiers and say the name of each veteran aloud as an act of honor and remembrance.
"REMEMBER the fallen... HONOR those who serve... TEACH our children the value of freedom."
There are two local events that you and your Scout may attend:
- Alexandria National Cemetery - 1450 Wilkes Street, Alexandria, VA, 22314 - 12:00 PM: This is a lovely event. However, because the cemetery is relatively small, you must be sure to arrive early if you want to be sure to lay a wreath or two. The event begins promptly at 12:00 PM, and is over within a matter of minutes! There is usually a traditional band and apple cider available. Find your other Pack 1519 scouts near the flagpole inside the cemetery. You may find it easiest to park at the Whole Foods Market, 1700 Duke Street, Alexandria, and make the short walk over to the cemetery.
- Arlington National Cemetery - 8:30 AM: This event is obviously much larger that the Alexandria event, so your Scout will have the opportunity to lay as many wreaths as he wishes. However, the event does start rather early in the morning. Also, there is usually a massive crowd, and Arlington cemetery is a vast place, so parents must be sure to monitor their children closely, especially on the Metro platforms and upon arrival at the cemetery. Arlington cemetery is an awesome, sacred place and will be an unforgettable experience for you and your Scout. Take the Metro blue line from Franconia-Springfield station to Arlington National Cemetery.
I encourage Scouts and parents to discuss within their Dens which of the above events they might want to attend. I have encouraged my WEBELOS to do either event. Myself and some of the WEBELOS scouts will be going to the Arlington event; and will be meeting at the Franconia-Springfield Metro station at 8:00 AM on Saturday, December 14. Others are welcome to join us if you like!
Scouts should be looking smart in their Class A uniform, and should be reminded in advance that this is a solemn event that requires their utmost respect, courtesy, and good behavior. No running and playing on the cemetery grounds!
SPONSOR A WREATH: Finally you may sponsor a wreath by making a donation through the Wreaths Across America website, located here: https://wreathsacrossamerica. org/.
As always, thank you for your support of Pack 1519!

CAR CUTTING EVENT
The Woodcraft store in Springfield will be cutting Pinewood Derby cars on Saturday Jan 11, from 10-1:30. Before the scouts can get their cars cut, they need to get a free coupon from the Northern Virginia Scout store next door. CAR CHECK-IN DATES
Cars must be checked in on one of the following dates:
• Tue Jan 21, 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM [Hayfield Cafeteria]
• Tue Jan 28, 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM [Hayfield Cafeteria]
All cars must be checked in on one of the above two dates. Cars will be measured and weighed to ensure that they meet the prescribed specifications, and that all four of the car’s wheels touch the track surface. Once the cars pass inspection and are checked in, the cars will be impounded until after the event is complete. We highly recommend that you do not wait until the last minute to check in your Scout’s car, so that you will have time to make adjustments if necessary. If you absolutely cannot make either of the above two dates, please let me know and we can try to make alternate arrangements; however, no cars will be accepted after 8:30 PM on Tue, Jan 28.
Siblings are also invited to race – we will have a separate race for them! If any scout or sibling needs a car kit, we have about 10 extras that will be available at 7423 Salford Court, Alexandria . The cost is $5 per kit. The cars will be outside in a box with an envelope to pay on the honor system.
Any questions or concerns, please contact me at the e-mail address below.
Good luck!!
